An exercise programme appears to improve blood glucose levels, gut microbiota composition and leaky gut in individuals with diabetes type 2

In February 2019 researchers from Italy published the results of their study to assess the role of exercise on the gut microbiota composition and leaky gut in individuals with diabetes type 2.  Thirty individuals with diabetes type 2 were assessed before and after a 6-months’ programme of endurance, resistance and flexibility training. Body size was evaluated, and gut microbiota and intestinal permeability assessed. Results showed that diabetes type 2 causes significant overgrowth of intestinal fungus, leaky gut and systemic low-grade inflammation, all of which were reduced following the 6-month’s exercise programme. In addition, the exercise programme also improved blood glucose levels and body size.
