There appears to be an association between the intake of alcohol and nocturnal leg cramps in individuals aged over 60 years

In July 2018 researchers from France and Switzerland published the results of their study to assess the association between nocturnal leg cramps and the consumption of alcohol in individuals aged over 60 years. The researchers stated that nocturnal leg cramps are a specific type of cramp which affects almost one-half of patients aged over 60 years. Individuals with cramps were matched with controls, who were free from cramps, for age, sex, medical history and medications known to trigger cramps. Information on alcohol consumption was collected via a food frequency questionnaire. Results showed that there appeared to be an association between the intake of alcohol and nocturnal leg cramps.
