Examine all available evidence before making decisions on sunscreen ingredient bans

In July 2019 researchers from the USA published their scientific article on coral bleaching. They stated that coral bleaching is a worldwide problem and more needs to be done to determine causes and potential solutions. A short-sighted focus on sunscreen ingredients as being the cause of coral bleaching provides consumers with a false belief that bans of these ingredients will erase decades of coral reef decline. However, these bans could lead to decreased sunscreen use with individuals being exposed to potentially harmful ultraviolet radiation. A closer examination of all available evidence on the causes of coral reef bleaching needs to be undertaken, including a more thorough appraisal of studies conducted under artificial conditions using higher concentrations of sunscreen ingredients, before any decisions are made.
