Researchers call for individuals to apply sunscreen or use nitrile examination gloves when undergoing a gel manicure to prevent photoaging and skin cancer

In March 2018 researchers from the USA published their review highlighting the dangers of gel manicures. They stated that the specially formulated nail polish used during a gel manicure must undergo curing under light-based units and that the majority of curing lamps emit high-intensity ultraviolet A. This can cause skin damage and increase the risk for skin cancers. The researchers therefore called for consumer education and recommended that individuals undergoing a gel manicure either apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen or use nitrile examination gloves in order to prevent photoaging and skin cancer.
